No Experience Necessary

Something that really caught my attention this week came across when I was job searching this past week.

I have been working in retail for the past four years so like some people, I figured it's time to move on to different things. Over the past month or so I have been looking for restaurants that are hiring for server or hostess positions. What I soon figured out was that the majority of the ads I looked through require you to have 2 or more years of experience in the restaurant industry....

So that sucks. How am I supposed to get experience when no one will hire me because I have no experience? It doesn't really make sense to me. What also doesn't make sense is that they will hire 16 year olds to work as hostesses so they can train them from the start but they won't hire someone who is 21...now does that make any sense? To me it really doesn't.

I then came across one ad which honestly made me stop and think for a while. The ad I found posted that they were looking to hire cooks and kitchen staff to start immediately. NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY.

Okay..so you're telling me that to cook someone's food I could walk in off the street, but to seat people at a table, tell them the daily special, and help clear some tables I need two or more years of experience? I have nothing against any hostess or server because yes sometimes they are busy and they do have a lot of work to do. It just doesn't make sense how they would take the time to train someone at 16 years old and not at 21.

Needless to say, I think my job search in the restaurant industry will stop for now. If anyone has any thoughts on how to get a job without any experience please help a girl out let me know! I'd love to know the tricks and secrets.
