Journalism has always been an interest of mine but when I was in high school, like many people, all I thought when Journalism came to mind was newspaper and magazine article writing.
Well this past weekend has changed my mind completely. If you were at the Bomber game on Saturday you may have seen about 70 young adults walking around with notepads and pens frantically searching the crowd. I was among that group of people. We had an assignment to go to the Bomber-Stampeders game on Saturday and had to find a story from one or a few of the spectators at the game. You may think this is an easy assignment since there are almost 30,000 people at the game, but then you realize that some people really don't want to talk to you, don't want to be quoted, or simply just walk right past you. Luckily, I found friendly people who were more than willing to take some time to talk. I have never met so many interesting people or learned so much information in such a short amount of time. It is crazy how small the city of Winnipeg is but it is even more crazy how so many people have newsworthy stories.
I had the pleasure of meeting Jackie Stephen who is the founder of Keeping Abreast. Her and her volunteers were at the game selling toques, mitts, and scarves in support of breast cancer. Just hearing her story and how she started the foundation almost brought tears to my eyes. It is amazing how one person can come up with an idea and turn it into something so much bigger.
Even though the Bombers lost on Saturday, many people were still out to support breast cancer awareness. You could see pink all over the stadium and it was certainly well represented on the field level. A few years ago players were fined for wearing pink in October and many people were really offended by that. It's good now that the CFL has agreed to let and even encourage players to wear pink to support this cause.
Being around so many inspiring people really made me feel good. A really good friend of mine recently passed away, and since then I've been one of those people who says 'I don't want to go through life wondering what if?' I want to try new things everyday and venture out into the world. Having heard so many interesting stories from people at the game really inspires me. I can't wait to keep going with Cre Comm and find out what new adventures are still to come.
