My First Parade

Parades are not lame...for anyone who wants to know. I was involved with my first parade this weekend and even though I'm an adult I had such a fun time.

The Santa Claus Parade was this past Saturday. Thousands (and I mean like almost 20,000 people at least) lined up along both sides of Portage Avenue between Sherbrook and Main Street as well as a little bit onto Main Street to watch the 103rd Santa Claus Parade.

There were over 100 floats in this year's parade. Everything from local sports teams, to firefighters, Manitoba Hydro and many other businesses participated in creating their own float to march down Portage. People young and old watched as the hour long parade marched down the street.

I went to the parade once when I was seven. This was the first year I was actually in the parade as a part of the Winnipeg Goldeyes Championship float (oh yeah!) It was such a fun time. Chris Salemedia and Amos Ramon were on top of the float with Goldie and Goldette. Laura, Andrew, Daniel Sloan, Joel and myself walked on both sides of the float waving and rocking the Gagnam Style. (by the way...many children know how to Gangnam as I witnessed just about all of them do it as our float drove by) Even though it was a little chilly, we all seemed to have forgotten about it once we started walking and hearing all the crowd cheers as we walked by.

Although I didn't get to see many of the other floats, I saw the smiles on people's faces as we walked by which I think would indicate that they liked what they were seeing. Our float was near the end (#88) so people had to see quite a bit before we walked by. I for sure got into the Christmas spirit seeing all the lights, hearing the music and just marching down the street. (again sounds lame but it was super fun) I've said it before, but I'm so glad to be a part of such an amazing organization. Thanks to Andrew Collier, Blake Schultz, Dan Chase, and everyone else who made this float possible!

So I wanna know what you guys think. Did you go to the parade? If so comment! Which was your least/most favourite float? What did you like/not like? Would you recommend people go in the future or have any tips for what they should bring/wear?

  1. Thanks for the link bud! I watched the entire thing on Shaw to see if I'd find you, and the only showed the float and the players.
    Glad you had fun!
    Let's go next year!
