When I saw this a light bulb went off inside my head. I'm currently taking a class at the University of Winnipeg called Reading and Writing online. We discuss technology and communication; how it has evolved and how it is much more complex than years ago.
I thought this trend was kind of funny...since some people in the class have very different views on technology. Some love all the new gadgets while others think that they can get by with minimal or no technology. Both are totally fine, but technology is beginning to take over.
Everywhere you go you see at least a handful of people on some sort of cell phone or smart phone. But do all those people really know how to use them? My mom got a Blackberry about two years ago and I remember trying to figure out her texts for the first while was impossible. She short spelt or used acronyms because she thought that it would make sense. Sometimes it didn't but that's what our parents think! And grandparents...well don't get me started. My grandpa doesn't understand text messaging which is pretty standard.
Communicating via technology is becoming more and more important. Things like writing letters and even phone calls are becoming far and few between. We are all about convenience and simplicity now and the faster the better. In Cre Comm, I am thankful for having a smart phone to communicate with teachers and class mates on a regular basis. While I'm sure I could find another way to do so, it is much easier to have access to communication at the palm of my hand. I don't believe our society is being brain washed with technology because I think that we need to keep up with the new trends. If we don't, we will fall behind and then maybe one day lose touch with the people we care about.
As far as parents texting, I think most of them have gotten a lot better. Having kids who have cell phones requires them to stay in contact with them which often involves texting.
