A Day of Love & Roses

Valentine's Day

The one day of the year where people spend ridiculous amounts of money on chocolate, roses, lingerie, jewelry, perfume, stuffed animals and whatever other crazy thing you can think of all to say I love you.

V-Day can be the best or worst holiday. If you're single it's either really awesome because you save a ton of money on whoever would have been your significant other or it really sucks because you're depressed about being single.

If you are dating someone it's awesome because you get to spend the day or part of the day with someone you love and see their faces light up when you get the various material items one purchases on V-Day. It may suck I suppose if you have to spend all that money but I'm sure something good would come out of it later.

So why is V-Day such a big deal? Can't you do all these things on any other day of the year and still have it mean the same thing?

I think the problem is it's become such a commercial holiday that you can't avoid. When you go to the store, all you can see is red and pink. You are suckered into it immediately. Red is associated with warmth, love, and comfort according to Color Psychology and pink is associated with love and romance. Put those two together and boom you've got your recipe for a day full of love and warm feelings.

Remember when being a kid on Valentine's Day was so easy? All you would do is buy a box of cards, write out one for everyone in your class, and maybe even stick a chocolate or candy heart on there (maybe two for a special crush). Why is life not that simple anymore! If we all just loved a little more, life would be so beautiful.

If someone does take time to do something special for you this Valentine's Day be happy! As long as you get to spend time with someone you love, that's all that should matter.
