People Are Quick To Judge

You know how the saying goes...you can't judge a book by its cover. So why do so many people do it?

Back in university, I took a Psychology class were we learned that when you pass by a random stranger on the street you instantly think of seven things about them. Whether it be about their appearance, personality, income, attitude etc. Seven things in a whole two-five seconds. Why do we do it?

It's natural. Part of our brain likes to make a character or ideal someone that we could possibly like or have in our lives. Weird right?

Why do so many people judge someone before they even meet them? It would make so much more sense for you to take the extra time to get to know people before deciding if you like them or not. Essentially our generation is kind of lazy and we will do the minimum amount of work sometimes.

How about when people you know judge you? That's always fun times. People are judged by the choices they make, whether they be good or bad. I am judged by people who think I bring stress on myself by taking an intense school program while working part time. Well news flash...I do have to pay for school somehow AND I like to buy a new pair of shoes every once in a while. So judge me all you want, I wouldn't change anything in my life right now.

  1. This makes some sense evolutionarily: early mammals who made very quick decisions – for example, about that charging predator – would have lived longer and passed on more offspring.

Now that few of us ever have to make such decisions, we can hold off on making snap judgements.
