The Hockey Song

The world lost a legend today. Stompin' Tom Connors died, 77 years old. If you knew him for anything, it was for his Canadian music, including the ever famous The Hockey Song.

The song was written way back in 1973 but didn't become very popular until about 1997. Since then, it has become a 'staple' song for American and Canadian NHL hockey games. The words were fun and easy to remember, making it a song that everyone could sing along to. Each verse is broken down into a period, like a hockey game, and a chorus.

Twitter always amazes me, because in a short period of about 10 minutes, I scrolled through my timeline and saw about 50 different tweets about Stompin' Tom. The word spreads so fast when someone like a celebrity dies or does something memorable. In this case, unfortunately he did both. The power of social media is huge. Within minutes you can find out something that may have otherwise taken hours to figure out when only the 6 o'clock news existed. It's still very sad that we had to hear this news today.

RIP Stompin' Tom. May your words, music, and talent live on in the hearts of hockey fans forever.
